Book Logs

Many of you have been reading books to and with your child. The Dum Dum Reading Challenge Books are coming in like wild fire and we love it! And we love all of the completed Book Logs we've been receiving!!!
However there are some things we want to remind about the book logs... Parents need to write in the title of the books and sign at the bottom. We are not able to accept Book Logs that are written in child handwriting and not signed by a parent. We thank all of you for understanding.

We want to CONGRATULATE the Students (and Parents) who have turned in Book Logs and the amount they've turned in:
Jayven~ 1,  Giovanni~2,  Jabar~2,  Graham~2,  Anthony~1,  Jamar~1,  Kaleah~1,  Lanie~2,  Zoe~1,  Zuriah~3,  Addyson~2,  Malu~1,  William M~1,  Maliyah~2,  Haleigh~1,  William S~1 and  Patrick~1.

**Currently all completed Book Logs turned in are receiving a Book It coupon from Pizza Hut for a Personal Pan Pizza. We will continue passing out the coupons until we have none left.

Week of October 8

We have a busy week planned!! We are in full blown testing more for Report Cards. :) And we can't wait to see what the students have learned since Progress Reports. (Please remember our testing is done one on one, so it does take some time getting through all 37 students. We do not put test grades into FOCUS until every student has completed the test.)
We've begun our new Resource Calendar and the students will all be going to the Resource Teacher TOGETHER~ MON Art with Mrs. Phillips, TUES Art with Mrs. Schmidt and THURS Music with Ms. Broach. Also, Tuesday is Walk to School Day. Then on Friday we have Silly Hair Day and Arianya will be bringing in Fun Friday Snacks.
**Email us if you would like to sign up for a Fun Friday Snack date. We have lots of available dates listed on the blog.**

MATH
We are starting this week with counting, writing, and recognizing the number 6. We will move on to 7-10 the rest of the week. Please practice counting with your child and encourage them to point an count or move count. We have many students who make mistakes due to double counting. The following videos are what we show in class and will help with all of the expectations.

WRITING
We are lucky enough to have a little bit more practice time discussing/ drawing detailed settings and people. At the end of the week we will begin our writing test. The test is 20 points; 6 points can be earned through their setting, while the other 14 are from the detailed person.
If your child is still forgetting body parts or drawing arms out of their heads... practice!!!

SAXON/ READING SKILLS
This week Saxon introduces us to a new vowel Aa. We will still practice our rule for coding with a breve- "A vowel followed by a consonant gets a breve and the vowel makes the short sound." We've been doing a lot of "chopping up" words. Make sure to review the words on the back of the Saxon papers. These simple words will be used later on in the Saxon Tests we administer.
Our Sight words for the week are: one, two, day & said. Use the slideshow to help you focus on these four words. **Testing for this quarter asks that the students read at least 20 words.**
Finally, make sure to be practicing your child's name writing. This is the easiest 5 points just for writing your name with the correct uppercase and lowercase letter formations.

READING
This week we are focusing on the story Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes. We are still working on the concepts of prediction, retelling and opinion. However we are adding compare and contrast to the mix. Chrysanthemum and Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse are both written by Kevin Henkes and there are many similarities between the two characters.
Make sure to be reading and discussing the story at home with your child. On Friday we will have a Comprehension Test for the book and we want the students to do well!

Pictures from Hat Day

Many of the students chose not to wear their hats outside during Recess because they felt hot. So if you know your child brought a hat to school, but isn't in the pictures... you know why. :)

Also our trial to Smilebox expired, so we are just going to post the pictures on here. Enjoy the cuteness!!

Updated Oct. Calendar

It appears that all the changes with Resource are complete and here is our updated October Calendar.
We will get copies made and send them home on Monday.
**One big change you'll notice is that the whole class is going to Resource together every time. This will limit the amount of work that's done in Art and the amount of instrument playing in Music due to only one teacher with the 37 students. However it will allow the students to practice patience and taking turns more in conversation and answering teacher questions.**

Nach-Yo Normal Science Night 11/13/18

Heads Up!! Our school is going to be having a Science Night and we want you to write it down. It's sure to be a ton of fun!!!

Box Tops

Our PTA is sending home a Cheetah Paw Box Top Paper. Please do not return the paper to school, until all the boxes have a Box Top taped or glued in every space.
Once we receive the paper, we will send a new one home. :) Sometimes PTA gives the class that collects the most Box Tops popcorn... not sure if they are doing that this month... but we want to be the class that supports CLE the most!!!
