Week of October 8

We have a busy week planned!! We are in full blown testing more for Report Cards. :) And we can't wait to see what the students have learned since Progress Reports. (Please remember our testing is done one on one, so it does take some time getting through all 37 students. We do not put test grades into FOCUS until every student has completed the test.)
We've begun our new Resource Calendar and the students will all be going to the Resource Teacher TOGETHER~ MON Art with Mrs. Phillips, TUES Art with Mrs. Schmidt and THURS Music with Ms. Broach. Also, Tuesday is Walk to School Day. Then on Friday we have Silly Hair Day and Arianya will be bringing in Fun Friday Snacks.
**Email us if you would like to sign up for a Fun Friday Snack date. We have lots of available dates listed on the blog.**

MATH
We are starting this week with counting, writing, and recognizing the number 6. We will move on to 7-10 the rest of the week. Please practice counting with your child and encourage them to point an count or move count. We have many students who make mistakes due to double counting. The following videos are what we show in class and will help with all of the expectations.

WRITING
We are lucky enough to have a little bit more practice time discussing/ drawing detailed settings and people. At the end of the week we will begin our writing test. The test is 20 points; 6 points can be earned through their setting, while the other 14 are from the detailed person.
If your child is still forgetting body parts or drawing arms out of their heads... practice!!!

SAXON/ READING SKILLS
This week Saxon introduces us to a new vowel Aa. We will still practice our rule for coding with a breve- "A vowel followed by a consonant gets a breve and the vowel makes the short sound." We've been doing a lot of "chopping up" words. Make sure to review the words on the back of the Saxon papers. These simple words will be used later on in the Saxon Tests we administer.
Our Sight words for the week are: one, two, day & said. Use the slideshow to help you focus on these four words. **Testing for this quarter asks that the students read at least 20 words.**
Finally, make sure to be practicing your child's name writing. This is the easiest 5 points just for writing your name with the correct uppercase and lowercase letter formations.

READING
This week we are focusing on the story Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes. We are still working on the concepts of prediction, retelling and opinion. However we are adding compare and contrast to the mix. Chrysanthemum and Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse are both written by Kevin Henkes and there are many similarities between the two characters.
Make sure to be reading and discussing the story at home with your child. On Friday we will have a Comprehension Test for the book and we want the students to do well!
