We wanted to say THANK YOU to everyone that ordered Scholastic Books!! Combined our class spent $210 and bought over 50 books. We also received 15 free books for the Classroom Library. :)
If you missed out on ordering, do not worry- we will be doing another order before Thanksgiving to allow everyone time to order books for Birthdays and Christmas. (Scholastic always has the best Christmas books!!)
**When the shipment of books come in, we will email the parents that ordered. We want you to be aware of the books being in your child's backpack.**
We are super excited to begin another month of school!! We don't want anyone to miss out on anything going on in our class, so we decided to post the calendar on the blog for all to see. :)
Welcome to a busy week in our class and outside of our class! This week we have the National Walk to School event happening on Tuesday, Oct.1. On Friday, Oct. 4, we have our school fundraiser night for the Safety Patrols at Chuck E. Cheese. :) We both plan on participating in both events, so we hope to see all of you too!
We have quite a few Resources this week. Make sure to check them out on the Calendars and the Weekly Conduct Sheet. On Friday we will have Sunglasses Day!! Also, Noah is bringing in Fun Friday Snacks for the Class.
SKILLS
We are beginning Report Card Testing. Please make sure to look back at your child's detailed Progress Report and see the items that they haven't mastered. We will be retesting all the items that were not mastered.
So practice name writing, letter names and sounds and SIGHT WORDS!! Sight Words were not tested at Progress Report Time and students are expected to read 20 at this time.
Our Sight Words for the week are purple, pink, to & and.
We have a new dum dum Reading Challenge book to work on and we are skipping our predictable chart this week to focus on a Poem~ The Hat.
READING
We are continuing to work on retelling stories in the order that the events occur. Some students are doing better at retelling/ comprehension, however some students are still struggling. Make sure to watch the books and review them with your child~ you are their best teacher!!
Our book is The Three Little Pigs. A beloved classic that always entertains the students!!
**Make sure to watch the story before you discuss it with your child. There are many different versions and this one may be different than the one you are familiar.**
WRITING
We are beginning our testing pictures. The students are expected to draw a character and setting of their choice and tell a story about the picture. Please remember that a "this is... this is... story" is not a real story.
MATH
We will also begin retesting for report cards on all our math items, including rote counting up to 25, number writing 0-5, identifying counting sets 0-5, and recognizing numbers 0-5. Please continue working with your children to master the items they did not during Progress Report time.
This week in math, we will be introducing numbers 6-8! This is exciting as our students will have more numbers to work with on independent problem sets. Continue using our counting to 100 songs to practice, so your children can join the 100 Club!!! Below there is also a video a subitizing, a skill we constantly work on and will help with the students identifying counting sets.
SCIENCE
In science we will continue to explore our 5 senses, focusing on our hearing and tasting.
Five and Six year olds in slippers is the CUTEST!!! We loved seeing all the different slippers and the students loved seeing them all too! Everyone did a great job staying responsible while wearing them. And we want to thank all of you for making sure that your children were able to take off and put on their shoes so easily. It was perfect!!
Enjoy the pictures and notice... even Ms. Bellot and Mrs.Cone got in on the fun. (I had my slippers too, but I was the busy photographer.haha)
We are excited for another great week and we want to keep you all informed, so please make sure to read through everything. This week our only Resource is Music on Tuesday. Wednesday is an Early Release Day! And our Fun Friday Activity is SLIPPERS DAY!! We are super excited about this day, however we need to remind everyone that slippers are not allowed to be worn to school. They need to be in your child's backpack and we will have them change into them in the classroom. With that being said, please make sure your child is able to take off and put on their regular shoes with ease. Unfortunately we do not tie shoelaces... we inform students to ask a friend to tie them or stick them inside of their shoes.
(If you have any questions about slippers day, please email BOTH of us.)
Also, Wednesday is DAD's BRING YOUR CHILD TO SCHOOL DAY!! We want to feature all the Dad's on the blog, (biological, adopted, male Father Figures!! You are all important!) So if you bring your child to school on Wednesday, please email us a photo of you and your child. We will make the blog post on Thursday to allow everyone an ample amount of time to email BOTH OF US their photos. :)
SKILLS
Letters and sounds are continuing to come along nicely. Please continue to practice at home. We can tell who is getting the practice in and it's amazing!!
We have our sight words for the week posted below in the slideshow; black, white, can & like. Our predictable chart this week is on fruits with the sentence: 'I like _____ and ______ . Please remember not every student will be called upon for this chart. Only about 13 students will get to participate in this one.
READING
Our story this week is The Napping House. This story is a tried and true gem! The story is great for retelling and discussing cause/ effect. We will spend a lot of time retelling the story using pictures and practicing retelling with the names the characters are given in the book. Ex. Granny- not "the old lady" haha. On Friday we will take another Comprehension Test on sequencing the characters and explaining the cause and effect issue in the story.
**More students did well on last week's test, but we want all students to do well!! Watch the video and discuss the story with your child. **
WRITING
We are continuing work on characters and settings, however we will be adding simple sentences to our pictures. Students are not expected to write words the adult way... however we do expect them to write the sounds they hear in the words.
For example the sentence: My family went to the beach.
Most likely this sentence will be written as: Mi fmle wnt too the beh.
AND THIS IS OKAY!!! Writing is developmental and all the students know a different amount of letter sounds. We don't expect them to write the letters for sounds they don't know.
MATH
This week, we are working on comparing and ordering numbers 0-5, and learning to answer "How many?" we have of a set quantity of items using words and numerals.
Below is a new counting to 100 video that we will use to practice our numbers throughout the week. There is also a video about comparing numbers that can be used at home to practice.
SCIENCE
This week in science we will learn about using our 5 senses to make observations. We will focus on the sense of touch and introduce our sense of hearing. Below is a catchy video we will be singing throughout the week to show our growing knowledge on our 5 senses.
Last week we sent home a Scholastic Book Clubs Flyer. We wanted to remind parents how exciting it is to order your children books! The prices on Scholastic are very reasonable and they offer many well known stories. Along with books on students reading level and ones that feature tons of sight words!
If you lost the paper flyers, do not worry. You can check out all the books on line. :)
So our Favorite Color Day was a HUGE success! We took our photos right before breakfast and the students were super excited. :) We were too!! We even got in on the photos! Plus Mrs.Cone came down and took a picture with the blue group. She was the only person that liked yellow... ooh and no one liked brown or white.
DISCLAIMER: We only ask the students to go up to the white board if they are wearing their favorite color. Most came up, but there were a few that just stayed in their chairs. If this was your child- we're sorry, but we don't make anyone get their picture taken.
We have received a few emails and notes about i-Ready. We thought it best to put a blog post up.
We have attempted to help parents, unfortunately due to school having a Single-Sign-On we are not having the same problems that are arising for many of you. So we thought the best thing to do would be to give you all the number to the support line for the District. They are available Monday-Friday 7:00am-6:00pm. Their number is 1-800-225-0248.
Good luck to everyone that has had issues. We know how frustrating it can be.
These students are able to produce all 26 letter sounds!! **Names will be added as students successfully complete this expectation.
