Week of February 11

We have a short four day week, a Valentine Card Exchange and a super fun Field Trip to the ZOO!! The students may say this is the best week ever. :) We have Art with Mrs.Phillips on Monday and Tuesday. Then we have Music with Ms.Broach on Thursday.

FIELD TRIP NEWS
We ask that the students wear tennis shoes and if possible a Chimney Lakes School shirt or a blue t-shirt. The high for the day is predicted to be 66*. Some of the students complain about wearing a jacket and we do not force them... so make sure to discuss with your child whether they need to wear their jacket at the Zoo. Thank you!
We have asked that all Chaperones meet us at school and follow the buses to the Zoo. SO Chaperones please plan on arriving by 9:00 so we can review the necessary Chaperone Rules. We will be eating lunch at 11:00 at the Shaba Terrace (at the front entrance) and we plan on departing the Zoo at 1:00. :)

VALENTINE CARD EXCHANGE
We sent home the list of student names and posted them on the blog. We are requesting that your child complete their cards at home. Students will not be permitted to fill out their cards at school.
Many of you will want to make a box or other cute container to hold the Valentine Cards. We understand and look forward to seeing what the students bring in. If your child does not have a container to hold them, we will provide a plastic Publix bag.

MATH
We are still working on putting two numbers together to make another number. This week we will be practicing finding the number pairs for 7 in our fluency whiteboards. In our lessons we are continuing to work on counting on from 10 to make a teen number. Students will understand that when they see a group of 10 or a full ten frame they can count on from 10. Students will then be able to describe the picture in words. Ex: 10 and 3 makes 13
Please continue practice rote counting at home. We practice whole group everyday and many students are having a difficult time.

WRITING
We are still working on the fundamentals in writing sentences and coming up with different sentences that match a given picture.
Please make sure to review the items that we listed on the Quarterly Expectations Sheet: sentences needs to begin with an uppercase letter, spaces need to be in between words, sight words introduced in class need to be spelled correctly, unknown words need to be stretched out and punctuation at the end of the sentences.

SAXON and READING SKILLS
Our focus letter is Dd. Lowercase d is tricky for the students... so review how d has the long stick on the right.
Our Sight Words are: now, big, are, their. Watch the slideshow with your child and have them read the words... if students have difficulty reading these words, we will review them again next week.

Our Blend is SL- and our Word Family is -ug.  Check out the slideshow and Youtube video. :)

READING
We are comparing and contrasting the facts we charted about Polar Bears and Penguins. We will discuss a Venn Diagram and how it allows a person to see the similarities and differences when comparing two things.
However, students will only be charting the information in their Reading Journals. I want them to get the writing practice and have them information readily available in their journals. :) This is easily done with just listing the items.
