We are excited to launch back into learning this week with Duval Homeroom! We know this transition will not be easy for everyone, however we hope that with time we will be able to get everyone on the same page and smoothly transition into resuming our scheduled learning. We as teachers are also not as familiar with the program as we'd like to be, however we will try our best to help you. Please email us both with questions you may have. Please note that our main source of communication will be through Duval Homeroom until we transition back to school. Below you will find the directions for accessing Duval Homeroom.

Work From Home Packet

If anyone is interested in a detailed 3-week packet, please email us letting us know. Another teacher purchased the packet and we love how it is laid out for Reading and Math!! The layout, along with an example of a reading comprehension page are pictured below.

Sight Word Money

I'm attaching all the sight word money file on here. We thought it would be a good idea to make them available for all of you to print. And if you can't print, it's okay. Still use them to practice with your child.

Enjoy and share with anyone that would also benefit from them. :) I'm trying to save it as a PDF so that all the margins are okay, but right now I can only allow you to access it as a doc document.

School News 3/18/20

Many of you have sent us emails wondering about school. Please keep an eye on the news and the school districts website.https://dcps.duvalschools.org/

We have an online training Friday, hopefully we find out more news to pass on to you... but for now we want you to have your child go on i-Ready everyday and complete 2 lessons. It could be a lesson in Reading and Math or 2 lessons in one subject. Just make sure the following day is the other subject. And as always... the students are expected to complete 45 minutes in each subject every week. :)

Now if you would like more for your child: you can find books and other materials on http://www.hubbardscupboard.org/ Also, I'm working on setting up Raz Kids (I get the dum dum reading challenge books from their sister site). I will only add your child on if you send us an email. (Your child's username and password for this will be their first name and then the first letter of their last name. The teacher username is Finocchiaj.) So if you wish to have your child read leveled books off of there... email us! :) Finally for Math, visit Khan Academy. I'm not familiar with it, but my brother swears by it for his daughters. So try it out and let us know your opinions.

Anyway, be on the lookout for more items to be posted here. Good luck through these tough times...

Week of March 2

Image result for march

Can you believe it's March?!? It's crazy to think only a few months are left of Kindergarten. :) Our students have grown up and been learning SO MUCH!! We are going to be testing soon, so make sure to be practicing all the items that were listed on the detailed conduct sheet. We want lots of Mastery to happen!! Also, just a reminder that Spring Break is next week (March 9-13).
But more important... This Friday is PLAY DAY! Our time is 8:55-10:10. Parents- if you would like to come in and Volunteer please contact our PE Teacher Coach Reed. Also, Snowasis will be selling shaved ice. :) We believe the price is $3.00 and we plan on visiting them after our lunch time.

SKILLS
We finished our A Word Families. Now we will be working on some E word families. Please discuss them with your child. The verbal practice helps with rhyming and reading unknown three letter words. A few that we will practicing are: -en, -ed, -ell, -est.
We have been practicing chanting what makes a blend. If you notice your child mumbling it, here are the exact words... "A blend is 2 letters that come together to make 1 sound!" The students even show their two pointer fingers and then quickly move to only having 1 finger pointing out in front of them. It's adorable!!Here is a blend slideshow I made to figure out if the word begins with a single letter or a blend. Enjoy practicing with it!
Finally our Sight Words. :) This week are: as, may, his & f.

READING
In Reading this week we will be reading multiple Dr. Seuss books, starting with "Green Eggs and Ham." While reading the books we will discuss rhyming words, retelling the stories and we will use our journals to write our opinions of each book. We will also touch on the man behind the name Dr. Seuss~ Theodor Seuss Geisel. We'll find out how he got the name Dr. Seuss, where he's from and how old he would be if he was still alive today. (He would be 116 years old!)

MATH
We have learned so much about addition this past week! We learned that addition is combining sets of numbers like we've been doing with number combinations and we learned how to use the plus sign. We will be learning about the equal sign and how to use it replace the vocabulary we've been using all year (i.e. 2 and 3 makes 5 will now be 2+3=5). We will also be working on addition story problems to continue practicing our skills.

Week of Feb 24

Image result for black history month
We are finishing off the month by discussing a few famous African Americans in History to celebrate Black History Month. Make sure to ask your child who we discussed on Friday and ask what they learned. :) We have resources on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Wednesday is an Early Release Day.
Also, if you have not signed and returned your child's Progress Report... please do so now. We want to make sure everyone is aware of their child's current grades. On Friday Kenza is bringing in Fun Friday Snacks for the class.

SKILLS
We were able to take back a little bit of time from Reading Mastery. :) (We are soooo happy!) So we are able to focus on WORD FAMILIES! This week we are focused on "A" guided word families.
Please note: we are using them as the gateway to mastery for producing rhyming words. Along with adding/ substituting the beginning sound to make a new word. We know it'll be great!!
Our Sight Words for the week are: now, big, are & their.

READING
We are continuing to pull information about of passages that support a topic. We are discussing various animals and reviewing animals that were taught prior to my return.
Please make sure to review that papers that go home. The answers need to have a simple picture and words. Many of the students are forgetting their words and the papers are completed together whole group.

WRITING
If time is found, we will be writing sentences for the animals we discuss in Reading.

MATH
We will be starting a new unit this week: Addition! This unit builds off what we were learning in our previous unit. Practice combinations of numbers 3-10 with your child so that addition comes more naturally to them! We will be discussing how addition is just combining two sets of objects. Some of the addition strategies we will be working on include "counting on", "adding with fingers", and "using a number path". We'll be using the following video in class as a fun way to start adding!
Students can also watch at home and practice more.

SCIENCE
This week we will be discussing the different sizes of objects and observing that things can be big or small as seen from Earth.

So we wish that we had more pictures from International Day, but we were so busy having fun that we only got a few. Below you will see our four students that walked in the Parade and represented the countries: Puerto Rico, Thailand, USA and England. Then the last photo is Ms. Bellot with her Mom and younger sister Alexia. They flew in from NYC and together they showcased Bolivia for the 5th grade students.
Make sure to ask your child what they learned today and check out the crafts they made. Along with their Passport! :)

Valentine's Day

We forgot to post these photos last week. :) And we couldn't forget them... here are our students spreading LOVE!!

Valentine's Day

Image result for valentine clip art

On Friday we plan on having a Valentine's Card/ Candy Exchange. We know many of the students want to bring in items for their classmates. :) We want the passing out to go seamless and we are requesting that the other students names NOT be written down. We want our 40 students to pass out the items to their 40 classmates easily as possible!
This may seem strange to some of you, but we promise it's the easiest way!! Just allow your child to write their own name down. :)

Also, if your child wishes they may make or purchase a container to hold their valentine goodies. Any students that do not have a container will be given a Publix bag to bring them home in.

If you have any questions or want to send in any extra items, please email both of us.
