Week of Sept 16

We are sure to have another great week in Kindergarten!! Read to find out everything we'll be learning and what Resources we have... :)
This week we will have P.E., Music and Art. On Monday we have P.E., but make sure to check the weekly Conduct Sheet to see when the others occur. Friday, we have Favorite Color Day!! Try to wear as much of your favorite color as possible~ shirt, shorts, hats, even sunglasses if you have them. Have fun with it! Sophie is signed up for Fun Friday snacks. :)
We almost forgot, on Monday the students will be taking pictures for their Photo ID's. These pictures will be used for checking out books from the Media Center and getting school lunch. We will also take them with us on the Webb Wesconnet Library Field Trip to check out a book.

SKILLS
Letters and sounds are coming along nicely. Please continue to practice them at home with your child and use the Youtube videos we post.  We have our sight words for the week posted below in the slideshow; orange, brown, I & the. Our predictable chart this week is 'The _____ (an animal name) is ______ (the color word). Please remember not every student will be called upon for this chart. Only about 13 students will get to participate in this one.
And we can't stress this enough, please have your child practice writing their name. If their first name comes easily, begin having them practice their last name. This is the easiest grade we have in Quarter 1 and we want all students to get a perfect grade on it.

READING
Our story this week is Lily's Purple Plastic Purse. This is a true Kindergarten type story, if you've never read it~ sit down and listen to it. It's about a girl that is excited to share her special items with the class. However the teacher tells her she needs to wait until a certain time to do it and she can't control her excitement.  ... Listen to find out what ends up happening to Lily and her items.
Our skills this week are prediction, events and plot. We will be predicting what we think happens when Lily interrupts her class. Then the remainder of the week will be spend discussing all the different events and the main event= the plot. On Friday we will take another Comprehension Test. (last week's test went okay, but make sure to do review the different events with your child so that they do well.)

WRITING
If you haven't had a change to look back at the students' people pictures on the blog post, please do! They are amazing!! The students are beginning to remember all the details we need on the face and the bodies. Slowly they are beginning to add details to their clothing and accessories like watches, earrings, purses and hats. :)
Now we will begin to focus more on our settings= where the story takes place. In class we will work on settings like the playground, the dining hall, the classroom and then venture out settings like the zoo, their bedrooms, the beach.
Below are two examples I found on the internet.

MATH
We have been working consistently with numbers 1-5 over the past few weeks. This week, we will be learning to understand the meaning of the number zero, and practice writing it. We will be ordering and writing numbers 0-5. We will also be introducing numeral 6!
Your child will be bringing many papers home this week. Please review them with your child as some students may need to complete and return the papers, and others will need to continue practicing what we have been learning. Below are a counting song and a writing numbers song to practice at home with your child.

SCIENCE
Due to our Photo ID's and resources this week, we do not foresee us getting to Science. We will on incorporating it into our Reading Centers.
