We have a busy week of lessons and Progress Report Testing!! We also have an Early Release Day on Wednesday. :) On Friday Kaleah will be bringing in snack for the class and we will have Character T-Shirt Day. (We pictures a few of our favorite cartoon characters above.)
Also, Tuesday is the last day to submit money for a Play Day shirt (Play Day is scheduled for March 8th). Wednesday is the last day to submit money for our Zoo Field Trip. (Our visit to the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens is taking place on Wednesday, February 13.)

MATH
Last week finished up our unit on Measurement with our Assessment. This week we are focusing on putting numbers together to make a larger number. This is a introduction into addition. We are using the words and, together, partners, and pairs. We are working on the numbers pairs for numbers 6-10. Below is the video for 6, however Jack Hartmann has a video of all the numbers up to 10.

WRITING
Last week we took our Writing Test. Sadly only 6 students wrote a sentence that matched the picture and followed our sentence writing rules. We decided to not take a writing grade at this time and try again before Report Card grades... that being said. PRACTICE writing sentences at home with your child or  you will notice a drastic decrease in their Reading/Writing Grade come Report Card time.
We do writing every day in class, but they need more practice!! Here is what we expect to see:
*an uppercase letter at the beginning of the sentence
*spaces in between the words
*sight words written correctly (our Word Wall is visible in the classroom, but some students choose not to use it)
*unknown words need to be "chopped up" and written (for example jumping~ most kindergarten students would write jmpin and that is OKAY!)
*Punctuation at the end of the sentence

SAXON/READING SKILLS
This week Saxon has Yy as their focus letter. Most of our students recognize the letter, but have trouble producing the sound correctly. So check out the Jack Hartmann video for some sound reference.
Our Sight words for the week are: an, if, her & called. Use the slideshow for some quick practice. We go over it daily in class! :)

Our blend this week is SH-. We have touched on this in Saxon before, so we are hopeful that the students will come up with a lot of Kindergarten APPROPRIATE :) SH- words.
Our Word Family is the ip family. When practicing word family work with your child, remind them that words in a word family rhyme!!

READING
Our lessons this week are structured just like last week. Our animal this week is Penguins.:) We will be discussing a few different Non-Fiction books and charting in our journals what penguins HAVE on their body, what penguins CAN do & what penguins ARE.
Be sure to discuss the vocabulary with your child and give them a step up on our animal. :)
Here is a interesting penguin video I found on youtube.
