This week we are busy finishing up any testing that was not Mastered or completed last week. At Progress Report Time we passed out detailed Progress Reports telling you exactly what to practice on with your child, so please reference that paper.
We have a Resource every day this week and we do not have a Fun Friday Activity, because Friday there is no school for students. Wednesday is an Early Release Day. Friday is a Teacher Planning Day~ we will be submitting our grades and figuring out which students/ parents we need to Conference with.
MATH
This week we will be focusing a lot on the numbers 9 and 10. This includes counting, recognizing, and writing them. We will be reading two math books that focus on counting on up to 10 and visualizing it. We will continue to practice our counting strategies one-to-one, draw a line and count, etc. We will adding counting on to our counting strategy poster. This means we want students to be able to recognize 5 and count on from it. We will practice this strategy a lot in class with ten frames and math tools. Please continue practicing the counting strategies at home.
WRITING
We will still be drawing detailed characters and settings, however now we will be working on writing simple sentences. Sentences with 3-6 words, most of the words being sight words and others being words that we need to "chop up" and write.
Please note!!!: unknown words written in Kindergarten will not be spelled correctly, but rather written phonetically. For example the word school. Most Kindergarten students will write sol. At this time that is acceptable writing and they are learning INDEPENDENCE that they can write.
SAXON/READING SKILLS
Our focus letter for Saxon is Nn. Make sure to check out the Jack Hartmann video below for some sound practice. :)
Saxon is working hard at coding words with a breve! Please make sure your child knows the rule for when we code with a breve. (A vowel followed by a consonant gets a breve and the vowel makes the short sound.) There will be more rules coming in the next few weeks... We have learned about two vowels: o and a. So we will be chopping up and reading words with both vowel sounds.
Our Sight Words for the week are: five, on, get & so.
Make sure to look back at the Sight Word Picnic post to see which students were able to read 20 or more Sight Words!!
READING
This week we are focusing on the book OTIS by Loren Long. He is the cutest little tractor and there are many different Otis books, so be sure to check them out. I promise you won't be disappointed.
We will be working on figuring out vocabulary words based on picture clues and the text. Along with making a connection to Otis about a time that we wondered off and got lost. Then later on in the week we will focus on retelling the story with the events in order.
