We have Resources on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. We know many students will be dressing up for the Character Dress-Up Day (we will too!! haha) but we'd like to remind you that we have P.E. on Wednesday. So make sure your child is wearing appropriate shoes. Also, if you plan on watching the Parade~ it should be starting promptly at 9:00A.M. And just in case you didn't have enough to worry about on Wednesday... it is also an Early Release Day!

MATH
This week we are finishing up our unit on numbers up to 10. This includes counting sets up to 10, writing numbers 0-10, and filling in missing numbers. We are reviewing on Wednesday and  taking our unit 3 assessment on Thursday. We have been practicing a lot and we have noticed that there are many students who need to practice more of missing numbers. Missing numbers means students need to be able to count on from a number to determine what comes next or before. Please make sure you are going over the 2nd Quarter expectations with your child and practicing. We are beginning testing for progress reports.

WRITING
This quarter really focuses on the fundamentals of writing a sentence. We will discuss an uppercase letter at the beginning of the sentence, words, spaces in between the words and punctuation at the end. We are focused on writing sight words correctly and sounding out all unknown words. When sounding out the unknown words, please remember we use a "pretend cutting board" and a "pretend knife."
This week I chose the sentence We can ride a bus. When we write this sentence together, only the words: we, can & a will be spelled correctly. The words ride and bus will be sounded out and we will only write letters for the sounds the students hear.

SAXON/READING SKILLS
We are focused on another vowel!! It is letter Ii. We are very focused on using our sounds to figure out words and matching them to pictures. Make sure to review Saxon that is sent home so that your child becomes very comfortable with their sounds. We also discuss the beginning initial sound of words. **This is a test taken this quarter. Please make sure your child understands the vocabulary and that it means the first sound they hear.
Our Sight Words for the week are down, is, my & in. Make sure to practice Sight Words~ the expectation this quarter is 40 words!!!

READING
Our book this week is Pumpkin Jack by Will Hubbell. We will focus on the stages of growing a pumpkin and making connections with carving our open pumpkins. On Wednesday we have a pumpkin craft and the students will all receive a pumpkin surprise that we made!!
Due to the field trip on Friday, we will not have time to glue the stages of the pumpkin in order. So we will be sending that paper home. If your child has trouble remembering the stages, please have them watch the video again for the book.

Book Fair and UNITY DAY!!

Today we had four new shoppers at the Book Fair :) All four had big smiles after their shopping experience. We can't wait to see the shoppers tomorrow!!
ooh if you want to join your child at the Book Fair, you are in LUCK!! Tomorrow is our school's Be Aware Fair from 6:00-8:00 and the Book Fair will be open.

Today we wore orange for UNITY and those who wore orange stood in front of the big unity poster in the hallway. (We didn't get a chance to sign it... so we are hoping to do that tomorrow after lunch. )

Book Fair & Red Ribbon Week~ Day 2

Today was a great day at the Book Fair. We had so many students bring money and purchase GREAT BOOKS!! Not to mention we had a few parents show up to shop with their children~ Thank you goes out to these 3 Moms~ Jor'Dynn's, Giovanni's and William M's!!! Thanks for supporting Chimney Lakes.
We had a few parents ask about sending in money on another day this week. That is perfectly fine!! We will take the students that have money down to the Book Fair to shop.

Day #2 for Red Ribbon Week. Sadly we only had two students participate in Tacky Tourist Day and we totally forgot to take a picture of Graham and Zoe... however they were able to get a picture with the rest of the Tacky Tourists at school, so be sure to look for them on the Chimney Lakes Facebook page.
Unfortunately, we missed the photo op due to teaching... so we had another teacher take our picture at the end of the school day. haha We love dressing up and participating in the school activities.

We have a few Resources this week. Make sure to check the weekly conduct sheet to see what they are. On Tuesday at 9:00 we make our Class Visit to the Book Fair. If you plan on stopping by to shop with your child~ sign in the front office and then wait for us in front of the Media Center. On Friday Report Cards go home and it is also the last day to submit money for our Field Trip to Amazing Grace Crop Maze. Money for the Field Trip will not be accepted after Friday!!!

Now on to Academics... so once a year we focus all week on a Science Experiment and this is the week!! We thought long and hard on a Science Experiment that would keep the students interest and allow everyone to participate. We think we found it!!
Does color affect the melting of ice cubes??
We are integrating the Science Experiment into all subject areas. In Math we will be graphing our predictions, using timers to check on the ice cubes and then transferring the data into our Math Journals.
In Writing we will be writing simple sentences about our predictions and findings. Also, please remember that Kindergarteners only spell sight words correctly. ALL other words are spelled phonetically and they only write the letters they hair.
In Saxon we are focusing on coding a vowel followed by a consonant with a breve, figuring out beginning initial sounds of words and our Sight Words~ have, make, be & up.

In Reading we will be discussing the Five Senses and learning about Scientific Experimentation. We will discuss how science projects have a Hypothesis, Procedures, Data and a Conclusion. We will also watch a Sid the Science Kid Video to see how Sid's class gets their data for their Science Experiment.

***Make sure to check back and see pictures of the students participating in our Science Project.  Also, in the past there has been a Science Night at school to see all the Class and Student Science Projects. So be on the lookout for any information that goes home. ***
